Paperback Spotlight: Exo by Steven Gould

opens in a new windowOnce a month, we’re spotlighting a Tor book that’s about to become available in paperback. Today, we’re featuring opens in a new windowExo, by Steven Gould, publishing August 4th.

In Exo, the fourth book in Gould’s award-winning Jumper series, Cent is dealing with all the typical teenage problems: High school. Boys. Global climate change, refugees, and genocide. Orbital mechanics. And, of course, the agents in the shadows who want Cent and her family to serve their own secretive ends. But Cent has plans of her own—she’s going to change the world. Cent: Tell him about breaking the guy’s jaw—he’ll like that

I was breathing pure oxygen through a full face mask and the rest of my body was covered in heavily insulated hooded coveralls, gloves, and boots. The electronic thermometer strapped around my right sleeve read forty-five degrees below zero. The aviation GPS strapped to my left arm read forty-five thousand feet above sea level. I was three miles higher than Everest.

Gould literally raises the bar on teleportation in this sequel to Impulse (2013). Seventeen-year-old Cent is your typical teen: She’s reeling from a breakup with her boyfriend, worried about her ailing grandmother and developing a plan to teleport into orbit—you know, the usual. Intelligent, resourceful and well-funded, she begins field-testing a new spacesuit and putting together a company that will both support her voyages and make a profit by placing small satellites into orbit and removing debris. It’s not long before Cent’s one-woman space program gains considerable attention, including some from the shadowy corporation that once captured Cent’s father, Davy, and still pursues their family. Gould grows more ambitious with every book in the Jumper series. He began by mixing speculative fiction, adventure and bildungsroman, then added in political and corporate thriller; this novel is primarily hard sci-fi while maintaining the other genres. By constantly experimenting with new tropes and extending the limits of the Harrison-Rice family’s power to teleport, Gould ensures that each installment remains fresh and enthralling. As in the previous book, Cent’s genius and her social skills (considering that she’s been discouraged from creating close bonds with anyone outside her immediate family) seem almost more unusual than her teleporting ability, but her character has an intellectual and emotional validity as well as an inherent likability that encourages the reader to overlook those quibbles. There’s simply no knowing where Cent and this series are headed next…but it’ll sure be interesting to find out.

Exo will be published on September 9.

Calling all Tweetgeeks: science fiction stars Greg Bear, Steven Gould, and M.J. Locke to kick off first #Torchat next Wednesday, 2/16 at 4 PM EST

New York, NY – Wednesday, February 9, 2011 – Tor Books is excited to announce the launch of #Torchat, a new SF/f genre-themed, hour-long chat series hosted on Twitter. Guest authors will join fans in lively, informative and entertaining discussions of all that’s hot in genre fiction (140 characters at a time) from 4 – 5 PM Eastern on the third Wednesday of every month. Each #Torchat will revolve around a different genre topic of interest, with new guest authors and exclusive fan giveaways from opens in a new window@Torbooks.

Next Wednesday’s first #Torchat will revolve around a discussion of “hard” science fiction, that ambiguous and often narrowly defined subgenre of SF that purports to extrapolate from “real science.” Special guest authors Greg Bear ( opens in a new window@spacegriz), Steven Gould ( opens in a new window@StevenGould), and M.J.
